Telegram from the Governor of Hong Kong to the Secretary of State

for the Colonies.

Dated 6th August.

(Received Colonial Office 7.10 a.m.6th August, 1927)

Secret Your telegram of 15th July Aerodrome and dredging work

now in progress figures quoted by you are not correct as they

omit cost of completing sea wall Nullahs basin for seaplanes

construction of roads and small additional resumption total cost estimated as follows :- (a) Resumption of Kaitack area

dollars 1,000,000 (b) cost of completing sea wall Nullahs 352,296 (c) Cost of completing filling 385,704 (d) Covering Nullahs 275,000 (e) Seaplanes basin 275,000 (f) Approach road(s) 55,000 (g) Resumption flight gap D23,500 (h) further small resumptions

considered necessary 11,500 Total cost of aerodrome 2,378,000

of which ☐ 1,783,500 as cost to Imperial Government. Items (b) and (c) together 738,000 vide paragraph 3 of my despatch of 18th January Secret (2) Additional cost due to using dredged material is estimated at $602,700 which with one quarter of cost

of aerodrome will make cost to Colony 1,197,200 these figures

are based on proposal to utilise hill cutting for 137100 cubic

yards filling required beyond that expected to be obtainable from authorised dredging. This may delay completion of work

by about 6 months but as existing flight area will be available

all the time I presume this will not be serious consideration.

To complete from dredging would increase cost by about 56,000 and would involve dredging without corresponding benefit to

harbour.
